40 Years of Extraordinary Shopping

Westfield Southcenter has a rich history of growth to meet the evolving needs of the South King County community for nearly 40 years.

1960’s

On July 31, 1968, Southcenter Mall opened with 116 stores built on 30 acres. At the time it was the largest mall in the state of Washington. Developed by Allied Stores, the mall was anchored by The Bon Marchè, Frederick & Nelson, JCPenney and Nordstrom Best.

Positioning itself as one of the first enclosed shopping centers in the state and a ‘climate controlled’ shopping experience, the original marketing campaign in the late 60's and early 70's featured an advertising jingle boasting "one hundred stores and all that room...Southcenter...it's always a beautiful day!"

1970’s

Nordstrom Best replaced its original store and changed its name to Nordstrom.

1980’s

Jacobs, Visconsi and Jacobs Co. of Cleveland, Ohio acquired the mall. Nordstrom, Frederick & Nelson, and JCPenney completed remodels and/or expansions. A 13-eatery food court was added to the center, replacing a supermarket and drug store to meet customers changing needs.

1990’s

Frederick & Nelson closed. Southcenter expanded its offering with the addition of Mervyn’s, Sears, an expanded Bon Marchè and 14 new specialty stores, bringing Southcenter to over 1.5 million square-feet of retail space.

2000's

Southcenter completed and interior renovation, adding new flooring, enhanced public restrooms and additional skylights, seating and landscaping. In 2002, The Westfield Group acquired the shopping center and renamed it Westfield Southcenter.

Spring, 2006

On May 11, 2006 Westfield Southcenter broke ground on a multi-million dollar, three level expansion that will add new lifestyle, entertainment and dining components to the south side of the center.

Summer,
2008

Extraordinary transformation of Westfield Southcenter complete. Upon completion, Westfield Southcenter will encompass 1.7 million square-feet and be the largest shopping center in the Pacific Northwest.
